Clay Aiken - Veterans Day - Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day in Canada is November 11.

Veterans' Week-November 5 to 11: How Will You Remember?

This Veterans' Week, November 5 to 11, Canadians across the country will join together to show how they remember and honour our Veterans. As this important week starts Thursday, the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, is encouraging all Canadians to think about how they will remember this Veterans' Week.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Canadians are asked to pause and remember the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives fighting for freedom and democracy during the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War, the Afghanistan conflict and during peacekeeping missions.

Armistice Day is the anniversary of the symbolic end of World War I on 11 November 1918.
a.k.a Remembrance Day,and Veterans Day.

Armistice Day

The date was declared a national holiday in many allied nations, to commemorate members of the armed forces.

Remembrance Day is observed in Canada.

Why the Poppy

The association between the poppy and war dates back to the Napoleonic wars when a writer saw a field of poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers.
During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae was inspired to write the poem In Flanders Fields on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle.

The poem was a great inspiration in adopting the poppy as the Flower of Remembrance in Canada, France, the U.S, Britain and Commonwealth countries.

The first poppies were distributed in Canada in 1921. Today the volunteer donations from the distribution of millions of poppies is an important source of revenue for the Royal Canadian Legion that goes toward helping ex-servicemen and women buy food, and obtain shelter and medical attention.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- John McCrae, 1915

Thank a Soldier

In July, Peter Holley was asked to sing the Canadian National Anthem at an event in Niagara Falls honouring the Canadian Forces. At the time, he wished he had a song of tribute to offer. He didn't. So he wrote one.

The song is called Thank A Soldier and is his way of expressing his gratitude to those who serve.

A favourite song of my uncles, all veterans, was Unchained Melody.
They would have loved this version of it.

Well done! The America Giving Challenge is over. The National Inclusion Project received donations of more than $26,000!
Many thanks to the contributors and cheerleaders on all the Clay boards!

Clay Aiken Happy Thanksgiving Canada

Thanksgiving More Than A Day

As Thanksgiving Day rolls around,
It brings up some facts, quite profound.
We may think that we're poor,
Feel like bums, insecure,
But in truth, our riches astound.

We have friends and family we love;
We have guidance from heaven above.
We have so much more
Than they sell in a store,
We're wealthy, when push comes to shove.

So add up your blessings, I say;
Make Thanksgiving last more than a day.
Enjoy what you've got;
Realize it's a lot,
And you'll make all your cares go away.

A montage for Thanksgiving
We have so very much to be thankful for.

As Long As We're Here by Clay Aiken - I love the lyrics to this song--

As long as we're here..."

October is Breast Cancer Month

We've all been touched by this disease in one way or another.

The humorous and pertinent writings of Erma Bombeck are often used this month--this is one of my favourites.

If I Had My Life To Live Over
by Erma Bombeck
The following was written by the late Erma Bombeck
after she found out she had a fatal disease.

If I had my life to live over, I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television - and more while watching life.
I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner."

There would have been more "I love you's".. More "I'm sorrys" ...

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute... look at it and really see it ... live it...and never give it back.

Clay Aiken - O Canada

This year, July 1, 2009, as we celebrate the 142nd anniversary of Confederation, we will also celebrate Canada's hosting of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Let's Celebrate Canada!

Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada), formerly Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), is Canada's national day, a federal statutory holiday, celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867 enactment of the British North America Act of 1867, which united Canada as a single country of four provinces. The occasion marks the joining of the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867.

Canada Day is an opportunity to celebrate our achievements, which were born in the audacious vision and shared values of our ancestors, and which are voiced in nearly all of the languages of the world through the contribution of new Canadians. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as internationally.

When Clay Aiken was on his Jukebox Tour he had a segment called Stump the Band. The audience requested random songs. In Toronto one of the requests was for O Canada.
Clay sang it to the delight of his fans everywhere across the country.

Canadian Trivia: Canada is the third largest producer of quality diamonds in the world. The mine was discovered in the Northwest Territories in 1991. The first of the Canadian diamond mines opened in 1998. Other discoveries have been found since in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec.

Clay Aiken-The Winner

"As you glide in your stride
With the wind as you fly away
Give a smile from your lips and say
Are you free yes I'm free
Now I'm on my way."

This weekend calls for "Fantasy".
Clay sang this Earth, Wind & Fire song on a guest appearance to American Idol in 2004.

The lyrics are so appropriate!
Clay Aiken's contract with RCA has ended and he's free!

Clay Aiken is setting the record straight: the former American Idol has parted ways with RCA Records, Aiken's rep has confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE.

"We were unable to come to terms in a recent contract negotiation, and decided that it was best to move on," the rep, Cindi Berger, said Friday.

My blogs on Clay The Man are a diary of sorts. They represent some of the things I enjoy, trivial chat most of the time! Do I ever think of anything other than Clay? Of course I do, you don't want to hear about them though!!

This week has been rather exciting with the highlight being President Obama's visit to Canada with Prime Minister Harper. I was glued to the TV set all of yesterday.

Looking at YouTube this morning I found tons of videos on the event.
Here is a five part series of the whole broadcast. Awesome!!

Academy Award nominations for 2008

'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'
'Frost/Nixon'
'Milk'
'The Reader'
'Slumdog Millionaire'

I admit, I know nothing about the current movies other than recognition of a few of the titles from advertising. I copied these titles from
CNN.com/SPECIALS/2009/academy awards.

My time to watch is when they come to TV.
My popcorn is better and costs less too.

That said, I do often watch the show..to watch the Red Carpet for the fashion parade.

Now--when one of these movie songs is being sung by Clay Aiken, fashion watching will take second place.

Until that time comes, I pass the time with pictures and videos of Clay.
